Number Twenty-five: Art Work Life Balance build a fire

It’s cold outside and we don’t need to go anywhere so why not build a fire.

There is something satisfying about starting a fire, there’s a phrase that springs to mind “The TV is the new fireplace” but why not change it, “The fireplace is the new multimedia device” so instead of switching on the TV, or computer, or smartphone, build a fire, make it the focal point of your day, you can only do this if you have an open fireplace, log burner, or feel like camping, don’t just start one in the middle of a room, there are many ways to build a fire so do some research; scrunch up some newspaper, get some kindling, rub two flints together, or pull out some matches, and once you’ve got it going think about the generations who went before you who started a fire and spend time looking at it in wonder, keeping warm by it, you could cook on it, have conversations round it.

It is amazing how far we’ve come, but perhaps there are some ways of existing that we could bring back or learn from so invite some friends round and have a chat round the fire and think about the art of making a good fire and good conversation, and enjoy the simplicity and wonder of starting a fire.

Fire related lyrics in my head at the moment

“I’m a firestarter, twisted firestarter”

“put another log on the fire for me, I’ve made some breakfast and coffee”

“We didn’t start the fire, it was always burning, since the worlds been turning…”
